NOTE:  At most, 54 needles are required to make the body of this garment; but the collar/hood needs 60 needles.

 

BACK:

1.  Cast on 54 sts in WY, using TD2 and open edge method. Work 6 rows, ending COR.  RC000. 

2.  Change to MY and Stocking stitch.  Work 30 rows.  COR. 

3.  Armhole shaping.  Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.    COR.  Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 6 rows.  Total 38 rows with 44 sts remaining. 

4.  Work a further 18 rows even.  COR.  Total 56 rows.

5.  Shoulder shaping.  Cast off 10 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.  COR. 

6.  Total 58 rows with 24 sts remaining for back of neck.  Place sts on holder on knit off on WY.

 

FRONT: Cardigan right side worked first.

1.  Cast on 27 sts in WY, using TD2 and open edge method. Work 6 rows, ending COR.  RC000. 

2.  Change to MY and Stocking stitch.  Work 30 rows. 

3.  Armhole.    Dec for armhole at right end, as for back.  Continue until 44 rows total, with 22 sts remaining.

4.  Shape neck.  COR.  Thread left 6 sts to WY.  Dec 1 st at neck edge (left end) every row 6 times, until 10 sts remain.    Then work 6 row(s) even.  Total 56 rows. 

5.  Shoulder shaping.  Cast off as for back.

6.  Left cardigan front.  Work as for right side, reversing shapings.

 

BACK HEM:

1.  With wrong side of work facing, hook the MY sts onto 54 needles, leaving every other needle in NWP.  Hang weights.  Knit 1 row using TD2.

2.  Change to TD2 and knit 12 rows.

3.  Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool.  Cast off loosely.

 

FRONT HEMS:

1.  With wrong side of work facing, hook the MY sts onto 27 needles, leaving every other needle in NWP.  Hang weights.  Knit 1 row using TD2.

2.  Change to TD2 and knit 12 rows.

3.  Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool.  Cast off loosely.

 

SLEEVES:

1.  Cast on 28 sts in WY, using TD2 and open edge method. Work 6 rows, ending COR.  RC000. 

2.  Change to MY and Stocking stitch. 

3.  Inc 1 st at each end of every 9th row twice to 32 sts (18 rows total).

4.  Work even to total 26 rows.  COR. 

5.  Shape cap.  Cast off 2 sts at beg of next two rows (28 sts rem).  Work 18 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row.  Total 46 rows.  COR.  Cast off remaining 10 sts loosely. 

 

SLEEVE HEM:

1.  With wrong side of work facing, hook the MY sts onto 26 needles, (putting 2 sts onto 2 needles evenly spaced across the row, and 1 st on all other needles), and using TD2 knit 1 row.  Thread every other st to WY and push the empty needles into NWP.  Hang weights.

2.  Change to TD2 and knit 8 rows.

3.  Convert to 1x1 rib using latchet tool.  Cast off loosely.

 

SHOULDER SEAMS:

1.  Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams. 

 

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:

1.  Bring out 60 needles to HP.  With wrong side of work facing, rehang 6 sts from right front neck holder, 12 sts from right front neck edge, 24 sts from back neck holder, , 12 sts from left front neck edge and 6 sts from left front neck holder.  Hang weights.  Push needles to FWP, latches open.  Use TD2 with COR. 

2.  Work 6 rows.  Convert to 1x1 rib.  Cast off loosely. 

 

BUTTON BAND:

1.  Start with left front for girls right front for boys.  Using TD2 bring out 56 needles to HP.  With wrong side of work facing, hang sts (approximately 1 st for each row along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and top of collar band.

2.  Work in 1x1 ribbing for 6 rows.  Cast off loosely. 

3.  Mark positions for 6 buttons, the first one 0.3 ins above the band bottom, the last one 0.3 ins below the band top.  The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 1.6 ins apart.

 

BUTTONHOLE BAND:

1.  Work buttonhole band as for button band, working buttonholes at the marked positions.  Check your machine knitting reference book for techniques.

2.  Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

 

FINISHING:

1.  Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit.  Sew side and sleeve seams.  Sew any remaining seams. 

2.  Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
